Skull defects are a common clinical case, and considering the clinical and economic impact of the surgery, finding suitable materials and techniques for making individualized cranial implants is particularly important. In recent years, 3D printing technology has been able to accurately manufacture personalized implants layer by layer based on image data of patient-specific anatomical structures and defect morphology. This technology has shown unique advantages in the field of orthopedic implants and has gained extensive attention and application. At present, the commonly used materials for 3D printing skull defects mainly include titanium alloy, hydroxyapatite (HA), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), etc., which have good biocompatibility and mechanical properties, and are used in combination with 3D printing technology. It has shown significant clinical efficacy in cranioplasty. In this paper, the advantages and limitations of several common 3D printing cranioplasty materials are introduced, and the principles, advantages and disadvantages of 3D printing technology used in combination with cranioplasty materials are discussed. Finally, this research looks forward to the future development trend of cranioplasty materials and 3D printing technology, aiming to provide reference for further optimizing the surgical plan of skull defect repair and improving the quality of life of patients.
