The diagnostic and therapeutic system of traditional Chinese medicine （TCM）， is centered on the framework of theory， method， prescription， and herbs.It has undergone a paradigmatic shift from "herbs，prescription，method，theory" to "theory， method， prescription， and herbs"， marking the maturation from experience accumulation to theoretical guidance. In the course of historical evolution， Huangdi Neijing recorded the use of single herb and small prescriptions composed of several herbs， reflecting the early simple practice. In the Eastern Han dynasty， Zhang Zhongjing’s ShanghanLun formed a system of prescriptions tailored to specific diseases and syndromes， and established the principle that formulas are derived from methods based on 113 classic prescriptions. From the Jin–Yuan to the Ming dynasty， theorists such as Liu Wansu and Li Dongyuan further enriched the theory， while Li Shizhen constructed the theoretical framework of Six-Jing differentiation. In terms of theoretical connotation， theory is the core and governs pathogenesis， method constitutes the treatment principles， prescription embodies the application of methods， and herbs correct pathological bias through their inherent properties. The above four form a closed loop of discerning etiology， establishing therapeutic principles， prescribing formulas， and administering medicine. For example， in heart failure， treatment follows the degree of heart-yang deficiency， with application of Guizhigancao Tang and Zhenwu Tang. In modern practice， Zhang Xichun pioneered the compound of Gypsum and Aspirin， incorporating Western drugs into TCM theory. In addition， the application of classical prescriptions has been expanded， including Sini Tang for septic shock and Guizhifuling Wan for chronic cerebrovascular diseases.This system highlights the integrity and openness of differentiation and individualized treatment， thereby providing a paradigmatic reference for modernization.
